Madurai is positioned on the bank of river Vaigai and has been the kingdom of Pandya kings in the ancient century. The city is constructed in the form of a lotus and is known as lotus city too. The place is spotted with beautiful temple constructed by the Pandyan kings and Lord Shiva is worshiped here. It was considered that divine nectar was washed at that place and due to it the Jasmine flowers fragrance in the place all around. Jasmine flower too has its foundation in the city.
It has anumber of small temples in and around the place so that it is aptly known as the temple city of India. Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple is the brilliant master piece of the area which is surrounded by concentric circles all around known as the cosmos city.
Sri Meenakshi Temple:
One of the leading Hindu temples in Madurai. There are 33,000 sculptors in the temple which are located at every turn. This temple is also nominated for “New Seven Wonders of the World”.Surrounded by gopurams, gateway towers, the oldest of which, the renowned eastern tower, built during 1216-1238 by Maravarman Sundara Pandyan. Each gopuram is embellished with stone paintings-animals, God & Goddess and demons. It is said that it is the actual place where the all the wedding rituals of Shiva and Meenakshi were performed. Being an enormous complex, it contains a great variety of sculptors of human emotions on the walls. Moreover, this temple displays the twin nine-storied temples of Shiva and Meenakshi on the south gateway.
The Mariamman Teppakulam:
It is very popular and certainly the renowned one. It is a huge tank adjoining to the Meenakshi temple in Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Vigneshwara or Vinayaka, this temple was constructed by Tirumala Nayaka.
The Thirupparankundram Temple:
A drive of 8 km from the Madurai railway station, this temple is visited thousands in a day. Even half an hour is sufficient to overwhelm tourist’s attention with the beauty of this place. Beautiful carving on the walls is the magnificent draws of this temple. Once served as abode to the Hindu God Subramanya, this scared destination was commissioned in the 8th century by the famous Pandyas.There is a shrine in a sanctum, dedicated to goddess Durga.
The Thirumalai Nayak Palace:
Laced with the history of a king called Thirumalai Nayak, this temple dates back to the seventeenth century. It is alienated into two parts- Rangavilasa and Swargavilasa. After lots of damages, tourists today can be viewed only one of its parts called Swargavilasa. They can also witness numerous structures along with it in this Palace.
